MANILA – GlobalPort is now holding talks with the camp of controversial cager Japeth Aguilar for a final deal before the opening of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup this Friday.
Aguilar’s manager Marvin Espiritu is already holding discussions with GlobalPort team manager BJ Manalo regarding the player’s contract.
“We’re already negotiating. I expect it to be finalized anytime,” said Espiritu in PBA’s official website.
Manalo said he is impressed with Aguilar’s commitment to the Batang Pier team despite having no contract yet.
He is confident they can iron out a deal for the former Talk ‘N Text player.
“We want to finalize everything para matapos na at wala nang poproblemahin si Japeth,” he added. “I don’t think there would be any problems regarding the contract.”
The 6’9” power forward arrived from the US late Monday to join the team practices.
Aguilar’s camp demanded his release from Talk ‘N Text so can get more playing time from another team.
“That’s what I’ve been looking for, an opportunity,” said the former Ateneo Blue Eagle.
Aguilar, the No. 1 2009 PBA Rookie Draft pick, stirred controversy when turned his back on Air21 Express and played full time for the Smart-Gilas Pilipinas.
His rights were later traded to Talk ‘N Text, which waited for Aguilar to fulfill his obligations to Gilas.
He played for the Texters in 2012, but later flew to the US and tried out for several NBA teams.
Aguilar ended up as a practice player of the Sta. Cruz Warriors in the NBA D-League.
