MANILA, Philippines - Arellano University pounced on University of Perpetual Help System Dalta’s erratic game to hack out a 25-21, 25-22, 25-6 victory yesterday and force a winner-take-all match for the NCAA women’s volleyball crown at The Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Chiefs dominated the third set to complete the straight-set romp as the back-to-back champion Lady Altas fell into a maze of errors and never recovered from close losses in the first two sets.
The Altas, meanwhile, nipped the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals, 25-22, 26-24, 18-25, 23-25, 15-13, to nail their fourth consecutive title in the men’s division. Perpetual also stretched its unbeaten run to 47 wins since Season 86.
A service error by Sid Gerilla dashed the Generals hopes of forcing a rubber match.
EAC was leading, 4-1, in the fifth set but Perpetual Help, behind Season and Finals MVP Jay dela Cruz and Edmar Sanchez, fought back and took a 7-4 advantage.
In his final game for Perpetual, Dela Cruz finished with 24 points, including two blocks while Sanchez and Bonjomar Castel contributed 14 points apiece for the Altas.
Howard Mojica fired a personal-best 41 hits, and had eight digs for EAC.
