UP secures Final Four incentive in UAAP football

MANILA, Philippines – Jinggoy Valmayor struck with two goals as the University of the Philippines (UP) secured the second Final Four incentive with a 2-0 win over the University of the East (UE) in the UAAP Season 76 men’s football tournament at the Moro Lorenzo Field in Ateneo.

The Fighting Maroons moved up to 22 points to assure themselves of a No. 2 finish at the end of the elimination round.

Valmayor, a national under-23 standout, hiked his goal total for the season to nine, the best in the league.

In the other men’s match, University of Santo Tomas (UST) nipped deposed champion Ateneo, 2-1, to clinch the third semifinals berth.

With 17 points, UST moved to third place after league-leading Far Eastern University (FEU) downed De La Salle University, 2-1. The Tamaraws tote 30 out of the maximum 33 points.

In women’s play, titleholder FEU eliminated La Salle, 2-1, while UP put Ateneo against the ropes with a 2-1 win of their own.

The Lady Tamaraws and the Tigresses both have 12 points and are two games ahead of the Lady Eagles, who have 10 points.
