MANILA, Philippines – The Jose Rizal University (JRU)-A Heavy Bombers, the University of Perpetual Help-B Altas and the San Sebastian College-A Stags defeated separate rivals last Saturday at the resumption of the 10th Fr. Martin Collegiate Open Cup.
Marco Balagtas, Dave Sanchez and Philip Paniamogan starred for JRU as they brought down the reigning Division 2 champion Ateneo Blue Eagles, 77-61, at the Arellano University Gym.
Balagtas scored 14 points, while Sanchez and Paniamogan finished with 11 points each as the Heavy Bombers picked up their second win in three games.
The Blue Eagles, meanwhile, absorbed their second straight setback to drop to 3-2 in Group A.
Perpetual Help-B Altas, meanwhile, defeated St. Joseph College Bulacan, 81-73, to hike their record to 2-2.
In Group B, the Stags got 16 points from Jovit dela Cruz and 15 from Jaymar Perez as they got past the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, 84-76.
With the win, the Stags bounced back from their loss against Perptual Help, 63-74, the other week.
In women’s action, Jhenn Angeles drilled in 10 points for the University of Santo Tomas Tigresses, who defeated the Our Lady of Fatima University Lady Phoenix, 82-47.
Commissioner Robert dela Rosa said the top four finishers in the two brackets will make it to the quarterfinal round of the tournament.
Action resumes this weekend at the Trinity University of Asia gym, with JRU-B set to meet UPHSD-B.
