MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine national football team will play Azerbaijan in a FIFA International friendly on March 5 in Dubai, the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) announced.
It will be the first time in 17 years that the Philippine Azkals will play a European team since losing to Estonia, 0-1, in a 1997 match held in Manila.
“We cannot let pass the invitation of Azerbaijan to a friendly match,” PFF president Mariano Araneta said in a statement. “It will be a good exposure for our national team.
Araneta added that the friendly will boost the national team’s preparation for the AFC Challenge Cup to be held in Maldives in May.
The Azerbaijan friendly will be the second match of 2014 for the Azkals. They will first play Malaysia in a FIFA international friendly on March 1.
Both matches will be part of the team’s preparation for the Challenge Cup.
