MANILA, Philippines – Despite some anxious moments in the second set, De La Salle stressed to the University of the Philippines (UP) Lady Maroons who's boss via a 25-15, 25-23, 25-12 victory in UAAP women's volleyball.
The four-peat seeking Lady Spikers moved to within three wins from securing an outright finals berth with a tremendous thrice-to-beat advantage.
Ara Galang fired 17 points, including three service aces, and had six digs for De La Salle, while last season's co-Most Valuable Player Abi Maraño added 11 points, including two blocks, and seven digs.
The Lady Spikers teetered when they trailed, 2-8, in the second frame but got their bearing back as the Lady Maroons (1-10) could not simply get the job done.
In men's volleyball, defending champion NU (10-1) overcame Mark Alfafara's 34-point explosion for University of Sto. Tomas, (4-7), 25-22, 20-25, 16-25, 25-21, 15-11, to secure a playoff for the second semifinals bonus.
Meanwhile, Ateneo (8-3), behind rookie Marck Espejo's 16 hits, downed University of the East (0-11), 25-20, 25-22, 25-12, to move a win shy of bagging its first Final Four appearance in four years.
