MANILA, Philippines –Rain or Shine rookie guard Jeric Teng is pleased to hear that his former coach, Pido Jarencio, has finally got the dream job he wanted when was appointed to call the shots for GlobalPort.
Teng said that Jarencio, who coached him during his collegiate years with the University of Sto. Tomas (UST), has always wanted to be a head coach in the PBA.
“I'm very happy for coach Pido at nakapag-coach na siya sa PBA... 'yun talaga ang gusto niya,” said the 22-year-old.
He, however, said he has mixed feelings playing against his former coach, who has mentored him in the UAAP and the PBA D-League.
“All throughout college sa kanya ako naglaro eh sa UST, sa PBA D-League,” said Teng. “So it's gonna be hard playing against my former coach.”
Jarencio bid goodbye to the UST, ending an eight-year stint as head coach of the Growling Tigers.
He signed a two-year deal with GlobalPort to replace interim coach Ritchie Ticzon.
GlobalPort team owner Mikee Romero hopes that Jarencio will be able to bring grit and character to the Batang Pier’s game.
"With Pido there, he can build the character I'm looking for to repeat the 'puso pride' and 'palaban style' n'ya [with the UST Growling Tigers]," he said.
