MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines erected a 2-0 lead over Syria, courtesy of Johnny Arcilla and Ruben Gonzales, on the first day of their Group II first-round tie in the Davis Cup Asia-Oceania zone.
Arcilla defeated Syrian-Egyptian Issam Haitham Taweel in the first singles match, 6-4, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2.
Gonzales, the Philippines' No. 1 player, followed it up with a 6-4, 7-6(1),6-2 win over Syria’s No. 2 Marc Abdelnour.
The games took place at the Plantation Bay Resort in Lapu Lapu City, Cebu.
The tennis action will resume on Saturday with Fil-Am Treat Huey and Elbert Anasta facing Abdelnour and Madji Salim in the doubles match.
On Sunday Gonzales and Arcilla will see action in the reverse singles.
