But Azkals coach already busy with Challenge Cup preps
MANILA, Philippines – German football coach Michael Weiss has yet to sign a contract extension with the Philippine Azkals, yet his work on the preparations for the AFC Challenge Cup have already begun.
According to ASEAN Football, the extension to Weiss’ contract with the Azkals hasn’t been formalized yet.
The football coach, who has been with the Azkals since 2011, was offered a six-month extension by the team’s management and the Philippine Football Federation (PFF). But Weiss has reportedly asked for more time to think it over.
Meanwhile, Weiss is already overseeing the Azkals’ practices for their upcoming friendly against Myanmar in Yangon on February 6.
The German coach said he wants more participation from local Azkals players.
“We already have strong people here in the Philippines,” said Weiss. “We want to have them for training; maybe we can still develop something.”
The friendly is part of the Azkals' buildup for the Challenge Cup qualifiers which takes place at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in March.
The Azkals are bracketed in Group E with Turkmenistan, Brunei and Cambodia.
