MANILA – The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) has acceded to the request of coach Chot Reyes to give more preparation time for Gilas Pilipinas by compressing the league’s schedule this season.

According to Carlo Pamintuan’s Yahoo! Sports report, PBA chieftain Chito Salud has announced that the league will be concluding the current season in July instead of August to give way to Gilas Pilipinas’ preparations for the FIBA World Cup and the Asian Games.

“The PBA, the team owners, and the governors have agreed to compress the current season shortening it from the original August 13 finish to as early as July 15,” said Salud.

He said the compression means limiting the Commissioner’s Cup and the Governors’ Cup finals series to a best-of-five each.

Reyes, the national team coach, has repeatedly appealed for more training time as most of their competitors have already laid out their training plans.

The FIBA world Cup is set to take place from August 30 to September 14, while the Asian Games will take center stage from September 19 to October 4.

Reyes noted that the South Koreans have already scheduled its training ahead of the two events.

Salud later gave Reyes a chance to convince the PBA Board of Governors to make proposals.

“We invited coach Chot to make his presentation and it was duly heard by the board of governors and a resolution was arrived at,” he said.
