LAS VEGAS, Nevada – Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire is the odds-on favorite in his February 4 bout against Puerto Rico’s Wilfredo Vazquez Jr., even though the boxing match will be held not in Las Vegas but in San Antonio, Texas.
The current odds for the fight are a -1500 for Donaire and a +700 for Vazquez, meaning that a $1,500 bet on Donaire will win the bettor $100, while a $100 bet on Vazquez will win $700.
Donaire is favored not just by the Las Vegas oddsmakers but by Showtime Boxing Host Al Bernstein.
“Nonito has to be the favorite in this fight, and justifiably so,” Bernstein said. “I favor Nonito Donaire against anybody from 122-pounds and below.”
Donaire is confident going into bout, as he went through intense conditioning and training to get him in shape for what will be his debut match in the junior featherweight division.
“Ako, handang-handa na ako, physically, mentally. Handang-handa na ako, kahit anong laban, kahit bakbakan, kahit chess match,” Donaire said.
Meanwhile, even though the Donaire-Vazquez bout hasn’t taken place yet, Top Rank president Todd DuBoef confirmed that Mexican boxer Jorge Arce is raring the fight “The Filipino Flash.”
“When I saw him, he said, ‘Give me Donaire, give me Donaire,’” DuBoef said of Arce.
“He wants the fight, now making the deal is different than wanting it. Hopefully we’ll be able to,a fter this fight, to sit down and have a conversation and bring it to you within the next 6 months,” DuBoef added.
