MANILA, Philippines – Coach Pido Jarencio is satisfied with his coaching career with the University of Santo Tomas (UST) even if he was never able to replicate the success he achieved in his rookie season with the Growling Tigers.

In UAAP Season 69, his first year as head coach, Jarencio led the Growling Tigers to the championship, beating the favored Ateneo Blue Eagles in three games.

He reached the Finals twice more, in Season 75 and 76, but lost both times to Ateneo and then to De La Salle University.

After eight seasons, Jarencio is now leaving the Growling Tigers to take up the head coaching job with the GlobalPort Batang Pier in the PBA.

“Maraming salamat, dahil hindi naman ako makakapunta ng PBA kung hindi dahil sa UST,” Jarencio said.

“Siguro, nabigyan ko na rin sila kahit papaano ng glory,” he added. “’Yung community, pinagsama-sama natin, lalo ng last championship.”

“Siguro, fulfillment na rin sa akin ‘yun. At the same time, hindi na ako nagkulang sa university.”

Jarencio also stressed that even as he leaves for the professional ranks, his heart still belongs to UST.

“Basta tandaan niyo, ang puso ko ay Tomasino. Ang puso ko ay sa inyo,” he said.

Jarencio has endorsed assistant coach Estong Ballesteros as his replacement.
