MANILA, Philippines – Mark Barroca's go-ahead jumper in the final seconds helped San Mig Coffee topple Barangay Ginebra in Game 1 of their best-of-7 showdown in the PBA Philippine Cup semifinals.
With the scores tied 83 all in the last 32 seconds, Joe Devance intercepted an inbound pass from Ginebra’s Mac Baracael. The ball ended up in Barroca’s hand, who nailed a jumper with 11 seconds to go.
With no time-outs left, LA Tenorio tried to save the game for the Gin Kings but failed to buy a basket. Marc Pingris later sealed the deal on the free throw line after getting fouled by Baracael.
Barroca finished the game with only 5 points, but his winning shot spelled the difference for the Coffee Mixers.
Devance topscored with 20 points to help San Mig Coffee gain a 1-0 lead over Ginebra in the race to four affair.
He was nearly unstoppable in the first half, wherein he converted 6 of his 7 attempts from the field for the Mixers 43-40 halftime lead. PJ Simon added 16, while Pingris had 10 for the Mixers.
San Mig Coffee was trailing 57-65 going into the final quarter, when rookie Justin Melton sparked a scorching run that gave the Mixers a 74-73 lead 5 minutes to go.
The Gin Kings fought back and worked their way to an 83-81 lead with 35.1 seconds left. An easy layup by Devance tied the scores 83-all before Barroca’s killer blow.
Tenorio scored 16 points for Ginebra, while Japeth Aguilar and Baracael had 14 and 12, respectively.
