Barroca named Player of the Week anew

MANILA, Philippines – San Mig Coffee point guard Mark Barroca was named the PBA Player of the Week for the third consecutive time after he helped the Mixers build a 2-1 series lead over the Barangay Ginebra Kings in their PBA Philippine Cup semi-finals showdown.

Barroca was instrumental in San Mig’s 85-83 victory in Game 1, as he scored the go-ahead jumper with 11 seconds to go that allowed the Mixers to steal the victory.

Ginebra equalized by routing San Mig, 93-64, in Game 2, but Barroca made sure that the Mixers would regain control of the series when he fired a career-high 25 points in Game 3 to power his team to a 97-89 win.

Barroca also added eight rebounds, five assists, one steal and one block in a brilliant all-around performance.

Speaking to, Barroca gave credit to coach Johnny Abarrientos for helping him learn the nuances of head coach Tim Cone’s triangle offense. []

“Malaking bagay ‘yung tinuturo sa akin ni Coach Johnny, kasi siyempre, doon siya naging successful sa triangle,” said Barroca. “Marami siyang naging championship noon.”

Barroca, who is averaging 12.3 points, 6.6 rebounds and 3.6 assists in the semifinals, stressed that he is willing to do whatever it takes to lead the Mixers to victory.

“Kahit hindi ako umiskor, basta makatulong lang sa depensa,” he said.

Barroca beat out Rain or Shine’s Paul Lee for the weekly honor.
