MANILA, Philippines – Talk 'N Text stayed afloat in the PBA Philippine Cup by beating San Mig Coffee, 82-77, and forcing a winner-take-all in their best of three quarterfinal series on Friday.

Talk ‘N Text, down 0-1 in the race-to-2 affair prior the game, leaned on Jason Castro and Ryan Reyes down the stretch to weather San Mig Coffee’s 4th quarter fightback.

Castro had 20 points, with 7 of them coming in the 4th quarter. Reyes, on the other hand, fired two successive triples in the last two minutes to stop the Mixers at their tracks.

Also making his mark was newly acquired Nino Canaleta, who tallied 13 points.

“The biggest difference today is that we had two days of practice with KG Canaleta and with the returning players in the sick leave, Ryan [Reyes], Noy [Baclao], and Kelly [Williams],” said Talk ‘N Text coach Norman Black in the PBA website.

The Mixers took Game 1, 90-83, to gain a 1-0 edge against the reigning Philippine Cup champions.

But Black said they only had one practice game with Canaleta before Game 1, where they also missed several key players due to health problems.

“When we first played San Mig Coffee, KG just practiced with us for one day, and we didn’t really do much on that day, and he played Ginebra (with Air21) the day before. Also, the doctors only gave the ok for the three others to play on Monday. So two days of practice really helped us a big deal in terms of execution and continuity especially on defense,” he said.

The game was tied 19-all in the first period, but the Tropang Texters gained the upper hand via a 7-0 run in the third.

San Mig Coffee pulled within 6 points several times in the final quarter, but Castro and Reyes stepped up their game to snuff the Mixers.

Reyes finished with 13 points, while Danny Seigle added 11 for the Tropang Texters.

Joe Devance paced San Mig coffee with 13 points, while Mark Barroca and June Simon had 12 points eazch.

The Mixers and the Texters will meet for the last time on Sunday to determine who will advance into the semifinals.
