MANILA, Philippines – The PBA Board of Governors’ Cup has agreed to shorten the season-ending Governors’ Cup to give way to the Gilas-Pilipinas’ preparation for the 27th FIBA Asia Championship.

PBA Commissioner Chito Salud said the board has discussed on Thursday the needs of the Philippine squad when it competes in the Manila-hosted tournament.

“During the PBA Board Meeting today, 3 issues were brought up with respect to the National Team: 1) composition; 2) possibility of revising and abbreviating the 3rd conf of the 2013 season of the PBA and; 3) the schedule of practices of the National Team between now and Aug 1, 2013,” Salud said through the league’s official Twitter account.

Salud earlier said the Governors’ Cup will be on the agenda of the league’s Board of Governors meeting.

“There’s the probability of taking a look at possibly shortening the Governors’ Cup format. I may be asked to make a study and I will take a look at it,” he said.

The Governors’ Cup is supposed to run up to July 28, based on the earlier approved PBA season schedule.

However, this won’t give the PBA-player laden Gilas team enough time to practice for the FIBA Asia Championship, which runs from August 1 to 11.
