Tagaytay Zonal Chess: So beats Torre

TAGAYTAY CITY  – Philippines’ top rated Grandmaster (GM) Wesley So scored his second straight win by vanquishing GM Eugene Torre in the second round of the Asian Zone 3.3 Chess Championship Wednesday here at the Tagaytay International Convention Center.

The 19-year-old So took a break from his studies at Webster University in the US to compete in the event hosted by Tagaytay City Mayor Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino Jr.

The top-seeded Caviteño prevailed against Torre after 38 moves.

"Talagang pinilit kong manalo. Hirap ng posisyon, buti napilit," said So.

So now has a total of 2 points and shares 1st to 5th places with second seed GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son of Vietnam, defending champion GM Susanto Megaranto of Indonesia, and Filipino GMs Mark Paragua and Darwin Laylo.

So toppled National Master (NM) Rustum Tolentino in the opening round.

The other matches saw International Master (IM) Barlo Nadera scoring a draw against GM Joey Antonio Jr. and IM Bayarsaikhan splitting the point with fellow Mongolian Gombosuren Munkhgal. – By Marlon Bernardino
