MANILA, Philippines - In keeping with its tradition of recognizing young, promising talent, the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) will be having a MILO Junior Athletes of the Year honorees for the second straight time during its Annual Awards Night set this Saturday.

Bemedalled swimmers Regina Erin Castrillo and Rafael Barreto earn the distinction of being the recipients of the special award to be given out on the night Philippine sports heroes of 2013 gather together in a formal rite presented by MILO and with Air21 as major sponsor, at the Centennial Hall of the Manila Hotel.

The two made a name for themselves in last year’s Palarong Pambansa in Dumaguete City where they won seven gold medals each, with Castrillo breaking four meet records for the National Capital Region, and Barreto registering three new Palaro marks.

“The MILO Junior Athlete of the Year is in recognition of his/her ability to inspire excellence among the youth,” said MILO sports executive Andrew Neri.

“The award is presented to the top young athlete, male or female, who has consistently displayed exceptional athleticism in sports and demonstrated the values of leadership, discipline, perseverance, and integrity in life.”

Inaugural MILO Marathon winner Numeriano Titong will also be given special recognition by the country’s oldest media organization in the event being held in partnership with Smart Sports, the Philippine Sports Commission, ICTSI-Philippine Golf Tour, Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp., Philippine Basketball Association, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, Sen. Chiz Escudero, SM Prime Holdings, Rain or Shine, Globalport, and Accel at 3XVI.

Now a golf caddy at Veterans Golf Club, Titong ruled the first ever staging of the longest running footrace in the country held in 1974 in a glorious feat remembered as MILO celebrates its 50th anniversary in the Philippines.

Popular broadcaster and sports columnist Quinito Henson and Patricia Bermudez-Hizon will be hosting the event that starts at 7:30 p.m.

Gilas Pilipinas is on top of the long list of awardees – 123 in all – to be honored in the affair DZSR-Sports Radio 918 is covering live from the venue.

The national men’s basketball team is the recipient of the 2013 PSA Athlete of the Year award for its inspiring and improbable runner-up finish in the FIBA-Asia Men’s Championship that earned for the country a berth to the FIBA-World Cup for the first time in four decades.

All former recipients of the PSA Athlete of the Year award are invited to grace the event.

Invitations for the awards rite had already been sent out, but those who failed to personally receive it, can get their copies at the lobby of the Manila Hotel Centennial Hall.
