MANILA, Philippines – Nonito Donaire Jr.’s promoter said they are speaking to two more parties who wanted a piece of the “Filipino Flash.”
Although it was earlier reported that WBO 122-pound champion Donaire is scheduled to fight WBA super bantam king Guillermo Rigondeaux, boxing promoter Bob Arum clarified that nothing has been finalized yet.
Arum told Boxing Scene's Ronnie Nathanielsz that aside from Rigondeaux, the camps of WBC champion Abner Mares and Vic Darchinyan have joined the negotiations for a Donaire fight.
“The Abner Mares people are talking to us now or Vic Darchinyan,” Top Rank Inc.'s CEO said, adding that Mares’ camp were “conveying messages from Golden Boy [Promotions],” which owns the promotional rights of the Mexican boxer.
Arum earlier said he will not co-promote the Donaire-Mares bout with Oscar de la Hoya’s Golden Boy.
But he said he can shell out an amount to his rival company for Mares’ services.
Arum said Donaire will make his ring return on April 13, and that his opponent will be chosen among Rigondeaux, Mares and Darchinyan.
“I just got off the phone with Cameron Dunkin (Donaire’s manager) and we are zeroing in on April 13,” he said.
