St. Joseph, Mapua score upsets in Fr. Martin Cup

MANILA, Philippines – Unheralded St. Joseph College-Bulacan and the Mapua Cardinals booked upsets over the weekend in the 10th Fr. Martin Collegiate Open.

Robert Manahan and Arvie Itulid showed the way for St. Joseph as they stunned the San Sebastian College-A Stags, 74-69, last Sunday at the Trinity University of Asia.

Manahan and Itulid fired 24 and 20 points, respectively, for St. Joseph as they nailed their first win in three matches in Group A.

Meanwhile, Joseph Eriobu scored 15 points for Mapua as they upset the reigning Division 2 champions Ateneo Blue Eagles, 70-61, last Saturday at the Arellano University gym.

Eriobu scored 11 points in the final period and the Cardinals went on to claim their third straight victory in Group A.

In other games, Joseph Gabayni and Aziz Mbomiko drilled in 19 and 17 points for the Lyceum Philippines University-A Pirates as they routed Jose Rizal University-A, 72-59.

JRU-B, behind Philip Paniamogan’s 24 points, crushed LPU-B, 84-64.

In the women’s division, La Salle blasted University of the East, 73-63.
