MANILA, Philippines – De La Salle University staved off a last-ditch rally by the University of the Philippines (UP), 8-7, to complete a first-round sweep of the UAAP Season 76 baseball tournament last weekend at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Already comfortably ahead, 8-3, after eight innings, the Green Archers failed to score at the top of the ninth frame and saw the Fighting Maroons scoring machine go to work at the bottom of the final inning with a four-run explosion.

Luckily for the Green Archers, the Maroons could go no further and posted their fifth straight victory while dealing their victims their third loss in four outings.

La Salle was headed for an easy win when Sebastian Thomas Uichico hit a three-run scoring triple at the top of the second inning that gave them a 5-1 lead.

The match went tight in the next six innings, with both teams engaging in a 3-2 exchange, until the bottom ninth when the Green Archers got their scare.

With two outs, UP stayed alive as La Salle committed successive fielding errors and Andrei Mikael Herrera belted an RBI single that resulted in those four runs.

In another match, University of Santo Tomas (UST) made a nine-run scoring binge in the fifth and sixth innings to finally notch its first victory in four outings with a 12-5 win over Adamson University.

In juniors action, defending champions Ateneo blasted UST in five innings, 14-2, to deal the Tiger Cubs their second consecutive abbreviated loss this season.
