FEU shuts out Ateneo in UAAP football

MANILA, Philippines – Far Eastern University (FEU) fashioned a 3-0 shutout of defending champion Ateneo de Manila University to retain the lead in the UAAP Season 76 men’s football at the Moro Lorenzo Football Field on Sunday.

Chy Villaseñor and Paolo Bugas scored in the 12th and 33rd minute, and rookie Resty Monterona added another goal a few minutes before the final whistle for the Tamaraws, who now have 21 points.

In other matches, University of Santo Tomas (UST) held a Jinggoy Valmayor-less University of the Philippines (UP) squad to a 1-1 draw, while National University (NU) stunned the University of the East (UE), 2-1, to keep their semi-finals hopes alive.

UP remained at second place with 16 points, while the Growling Tigers, who have 11 points, trail the Red Warriors by a point.

FidelKue opened the scoring for UST before Gabe Mendoza fired the equalizer for UP.

Paolo Salenga (10th minute) and Jay Abalunan (16th) scored early goals for the Bulldogs, who now have eight points.

UE’s Fitch Arboleda took one back for the Warriors when he converted an 88th minute free kick. It was his sixth goal of the season, tying Valmayor for the lead.

Valmayor was suspended for their game against UST after incurring two yellow cards this season.

In women’s play, UST and titleholder FEU battled to a scoreless draw to keep the lead with 11 points, while Ateneo stayed at second place with nine points after a 1-1 draw against La Salle.
