MANILA, Philippines – Veteran Brazilian fighter Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort wants a rematch against UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones after his dominant victory over Britain’s Michael Bisping in the main event of UFC on FX 7 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Belfort knocked out Bisping with a kick to the head in the second round of their encounter, then asked the UFC brass to give him another shot at Jones.
“Take that punk Chael Sonnen away,” said Belfort, as quoted by UFC.com. “Dana (White), Lorenzo (Fertitta), take him out.”
Sonnen, a former middleweight contender, is challenging Jones for the light-heavyweight championship on April 27 at UFC 159.
“Let me fight Jon Jones,” Belfort said. “I need that rematch. Take that clown out. Let me fight the real champion.”
Belfort lost to Jones when they fought at UFC 152, but the Brazilian legend came close to beating “Bones” when he caught the champion in an armbar early in the first round.
Jones managed to escape the armbar, however, and wound up submitting Belfort with an Americana in the fourth round.
Sonnen was quick to respond to Belfort, telling the Brazilian that he accepted the challenge.
“Let me be real clear and speak direct with you, Vitor: you’ve been telling the world that you’d like to meet Jesus. I’d be glad to arrange that travel,” Sonnen said, as quoted by MMA Mania.
“But first, I’m going to get rid of Jon Jones. But you are next. Let me be clear: Vitor, I accept. Don’t make any mistake about that,” he added.
“You have called me out twice now – once after I signed a contract to fight Anderson Silva and once when you know I was busy with Jon Jones. I accept.”
