Mexico ideal for Pac-Marquez V, says Arum
MANILA, Philippines – For boxing promoter Bob Arum, it would be ideal for both Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez not to take tune-up fights before their supposed fifth face-off.
Arum said it would be bad to stage interim fights when Pacquiao-Marquez V is the fight to see.
“I would prefer neither of them take an interim fight,” the Top Rank Inc. CEO said in Boxing Scene.
“Because wherever I go, people used to ask me, ‘When is Pacquiao going to fight Mayweather?’ And now wherever I go, they say, ‘When is the rematch going to happen?’”
Pacquiao is pushing for a ring return in April with Manila as one of the possible venues.
He said that if it could be arranged, he’ll fight at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Arum, however, frowned at the idea, citing that “there’s no money to do” for a Pacquiao bout in the Philippines.
“And you can’t go the first week in April because you’re up against the Final Four basketball and you get killed [on pay-per-view],” he said.
Marquez, on the other hand, has yet to formally announce if he’ll continue fighting or not.
Arum said that if Pacquiao and Marquez agree to a fifth match, they could probably hold it in September.
“They’ll wait until September to fight and it’ll probably happen in Mexico or the United States,” Arum said. “But I think in Mexico because there’s no tax.”
