MANILA, Philippines – Alaska players Calvin Abueva and Gabby Espinas are in hot water for playing in a small town league unsanctioned by the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).

According to Snow Badua’s report in the league website, PBA chieftain Chito Salud has issued memos on Abeva and Espinas for participating in a small league in Bulacan.

Salud said that Article 10 of the Players’ Uniform Contract (UPC) prohibits PBA players from participating in unsanctioned tournaments and sports other than basketball.

“Nasa UPC ‘yun. That rule does not prohibit them from earning extra money, but to protect them against injury and undue harm,” said the PBA commissioner.

“I will wait for their letter of explanation and then decide on it,” he added,

Abueva himself admitted that he was reprimanded by Alaska coach Luigi Trillo for his actions.

He said he failed to inform his coach about playing in Bulacan.

“Katuwaan lang naman ‘yun, kaunting showtime para mapasaya lang ang mga tao roon,” said Abueva.

The two players were given 24 hours starting Friday to explain their actions.

Salud will come out with his decision on Monday.
