Wesley So defeats Israeli GM, remains in 2nd

MANILA, Philippines -- Filipino Grandmaster Wesley So (ELO 2719) defeated Israeli GM Boris Gelfand (2777) to remain in a share of second place at the 76th Tata Steel Tournament Masters in Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.

So prevailed against Gelfand after 29 moves of Sicilian Rossolimo in the fifth round of the Category A competition.

He now has a total of 3.5 points, the same output of local bet GM Anish Giri (2737).

Giri brought down GM Pentala Harikrishna (2708) of India after 71 moves of Giuoco Piano Opening.

So will meet tournament leader and top seed GM Levon Aronian of Armenia (2803) on Saturday.

Aronian beat GM Arkadij Naiditsch (2737) of Germany after 57 moves of Ruy Lopez Berlin to raise his total to 4.0 points.
