Wesley So goes up against Israeli GM

MANILA, Philippines -- Filipino Grandmaster Wesley So (ELO 2719) will face Israeli GM Boris Gelfand (2777) in the fifth round of Category A of the ongoing 76th Tata Steel Tournament Masters in Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam on Friday (Saturday, Manila time).

Both So and Gelfand are coming off a one-day break from the competition after scoring separate draws against their respective foes.

So , the country’s top player, scored three straight draws in as many rounds against local bet GM Anish Giri (2737).

Joining So in second place are fellow 2.5 pointers Giri, GM Pentala Harikrishna (2706) of India and GM Sergey Karjakin (2756) of Russia.

Gelfand, meantime, halved the point with GM Arkadij Naiditsch (2737) of Germany after 30 moves of King's Indian Averbakh.

Top seed GM Levon Aronian (2803) of Armenia defeated GM Hikaru Nakamura (2789) of the US after 44 moves of King's Indian Classical to grab the solo leadership board with 3.0 points.

Aronian will face Naiditsch in the next round of the 12 player, round robin event. -Marlon Bernardino
