MANILA, Philippines – San Mig Coffee proved too much for Talk 'N Text as it vanquished the PBA Philippine Cup defending champion, 100-87, in the main game Friday night.
It was the fourth-straight victory and seventh win overall for the Mixers, which began the tournament with a 1-5 win-loss slate. San Mig Coffee moved up to fifth place with a 7-7 card.
Peter June Simon topscored for the Mixers with 19 points, while Mark Barroca added 16 markers, 7 assists, and 4 steals for an all-around performance.
San Mig Coffee, which was in complete control of the game, also got 14 points from Joe Devance.
Talk ‘N Text got buried in a 38-50 hole late in the second quarter. But they clawed back to pull within 64-67 in the third.
The Mixers, however, regrouped and closed out the Texters in the final period.
Jayson Castro led Talk ‘N Text with 21 points. Ranidel De Ocampo chipped in 14 points, while Larry Fonacier and Jimmy Alapag tallied had 12 points each.
The two teams, which are expected to finish the eliminations phase at 4th and 5th place, will again clash in a best-of-3 quarterfinal duel.
San Mig coffee coach Tim Cone said it won’t be an easy showdown when they face talk ‘N Text again in the quarters.
“The next time we meet again (in the quarters), stakes will be the same. They will be a lot tougher,” said Cone in the league’s official website.
“We’re playing a best-of-three series, and we have to figure out how to beat them two more times. That’s tough,” he added.
