MANILA, Philippines – Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones is tired of hearing trash talk from former Strikeforce heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier.
Cormier, who defeated Dion Staring in the final Strikeforce event last January 12, called out both Jones and former heavyweight champion Frank Mir after his victory.
“I signed my UFC contract. April 20 on FOX, Frank Mir, let’s do it,” Cormier said, as quoted by MMA Mania. “It was supposed to happen, and we were supposed to fight in Oklahoma, so he owes it to me.”
Cormier also fired a shot at Jones, saying: “I’m going to let Jon defend his belt on April 27 (against Chael Sonnen), and then I’m going to kick his ass in the fall.”
After fighting Mir, Cormier plans to drop to light-heavyweight to challenge Jones, and the reigning champion welcomes the challenge.
“I think the guy (Cormier) is a tremendous athlete and I wish he would just do it and just stop talking about,” Jones said, as quoted by MMA Mania in a separate report.
“I am open to fighting the best guys in the world. That’s why I’m here,” Jones added.
UFC President Dana White has hinted that Cormier may get a shot at Jones sooner rather than later.
“It’s awesome. (Cormier) is going to bring a lot of excitement to the heavyweight or light-heavyweight division,” White said after UFC 155. “He could be next in line to fight Jones.”
