MANILA, Philippines – Four-division champion Nonito Donaire Jr. will be pitted against WBA super bantamweight king Guillermo Rigondeaux sometime in April, according to an online report.
Philboxing’s Ronnie Nathanielsz reported that WBO super bantamweight champion Donaire will be given the opportunity to go after Rigondeaux’s WBA title on April 27.
Donaire earlier said he wanted to fight undefeated WBC champion Abner Mares.
But Mares fights under Golden Boy Promotions, which is a direct competitor of Donaire’s handler, Top Rank Inc.
Cuba’s Rigondeaux, on the other hand, is also under contract with Top Rank and this led to the reported matchup between the “Filipino Flash” and Rigondeaux.
Donaire is coming off a spectacular third-round knockout over Mexican superstar Jorge Arce last December.
Rigondeaux, meanwhile, won a unanimous decision over Roberto Marroquin last September.
