MANILA – Philippine Azkals team manager Dan Palami is set to leave for Dubai next week to meet with five foreign coaches who are being considered for the position of national team head coach.
This comes after the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) terminated the services of head coach Hans Michael Weiss effective January 15.
Speaking on ANC’s “Hardball,” Palami said there were five coaches included in the shortlist, though he revealed that as many as 12 were considered.
“Surprisingly, when this news came out, maybe a day or two after, we had about 12 candidates who sent résumés,” Palami said.
Palami said the foreign coaches were aware of how fast Philippine football has developed in just three years.
“They know that something is happening here,” he said. “Actually, even FIFA has applauded and admired how things have been going well for the national team.”
The five coaches being considered for the Azkals job have strong credentials, Palami said.
“We have a candidate who has World Cup experience as a player and as a coach,” he revealed. “We have a candidate who has been captain of Barcelona and also has World Cup credentials.”
There needs to be a new coach for the Azkals by the first week of February in order to give the team enough time to prepare for the AFC Challenge Cup in May.
