MANILA, Philippines – International Boxing Federation (IBF) light-flyweight champion Johnriel Casimero will go on the road to defend his title against mandatory challenger Luis Alberto Rios in Panama.
Casimero’s promoter, Sammy Gello-Ani, confirmed the news with Rene Bonsubre of PhilBoxing.
It will be Casimer’s second title defense, after beating Mexico’ Pedro Guevara in his hometown of Mazatlan, Mexico in August 2012.
But Gello-Ani expressed his disappointment that Casimero will once again have to travel abroad to defend his world championship.
“With the sizable promotional budget, Philippine television has not yet shown their support,” Gello-Ani told PhilBoxing.
“Hence, the only way is to bring the fight to the country that can support the mandatory defense.”
“Panama is more than willing to host it,” he added.
Casimero won the interim IBF belt after beating Argentina’s Luis Lazarte in a bout now notorious for the riot that happened following the Filipino’s victory.
He was awarded the full title after former champion Ulises Solis was unable to make a mandatory defense by the IBF’s deadline.
