MANILA, Philippines - Jumbo Plastic and Blackwater Sports charged past their respective rivals with big runs in the second half to enhance their playoff drive in the PBA D-League Aspirants’ Cup at the Trinity University of Asia gym in QC yesterday.
Elliot Tan scored 17 points and had five assists while Jan Colina sparked a third quarter breakaway as the Giants bounced back from a setback to the NLEX Road Warriors with an 86-72 romp over the Boracay Rum Waves.
“The guys were very anxious today after losing badly to NLEX last week. But I thought we played smart today. Jan (Colina) was exceptionally well today. He was all over the court. The way he played today was really beyond our expectation,” said Jumbo Plastic coach Steven Tiu, whose wards improved to 9-3.
Colina picked up his rhythm in the third and led the Giants’ breakaway. He scored eight points in a 13-3 run to help stretch Jumbo Plastic’s six-point halftime lead to 45-29.
Colina eventually finished with 16 points and pulled down seven rebounds, had one assist, four steals and one block in a stellar 30-minute job.
Later in the day, Jericho Cruz tallied 31 points as Blackwater Sports subdued Derulo Accelero, 94-80.
Allan Mangahas fired 17 points and had seven assists while Gio Ciriacruz added 11 markers for the Elite who notched their sixth win in nine games.
Derulo Accelero dropped to 1-10.
“This is a big game for us. I thought this win assured us a spot in the quarterfinals,” said Tiu.
The Giants wind up their elimination round campaign against the Cebuana Lhuillier Gems tomorrow.
Another victory will likely net the Giants either third or fourth place for a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarters.
Jumbo Plastic also got big games from Karl Dehesa (14 points), Harold Arboleda (12 points) and Harry Petilos, who went 3 of 9 from three-point range in the first half to get things going for the Giants.
Marion Magat came off the bench and pulled down 12 rebounds as Jumbo Plastic gained a 46-41 advantage off the glass.
The loss snapped Boracay Rum’s three game winning run as the Waves bowed out of the quarterfinal race with a 5-6 card.
