Three teams share lead in UAAP chess

MANILA, Philippines – Adamson University and National University (NU) found themselves tied with perennial contenders De La Salle University in the top spot after two rounds of men’s play in the UAAP Season 76 chess tournament last weekend at the De La Salle Razon Sports Center.

The Green Woodpushers, who placed third last season, opened their campaign with identical 3-1 victories over defending champions University of Santo Tomas (UST) and Ateneo de Manila University for six points.

The Soaring Falcons, this season’s hosts, made an early statement by beating University of the Philippines and former titlist Far Eastern University (FEU) on 3-1 scores to also collect six points.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs hacked out 3-1 victories over the Blue eagles and the Growling Tigers for a six-point output after the first two rounds.

In women’s play, four-peat seeking La Salle grabbed the early lead after trouncing FEU, 3-1, and Adamson, 3-1, to collect six points.

UST is in second place with 5.5 points, followed by NU with five points in third place.

The Tigresses routed the Lady Warriors, 3.5-0.5 in the opening round and battled to a 2-2 draw with the Lady Maroons.
