MANILA, Philippines – Rain or Shine big man Beau Belga has been named the PBA Player of the Week for the period of January 7-13 after helping the Elasto Painters book a vital victory over defending Philippine Cup champion Talk ‘N Text.

Against the Tropang Texters, Belga notched 16 points on seven-of-nine shooting from the field, including a baseline jumper in the final seconds that allowed Rain or Shine to come away with a slim 90-88 victory.

Belga credited his performance to the extra work that he puts in before practice.

“Before start of practice ako nag-shoo-shooting, kaya dumarating ako ng maaga,” he explained to “So far, iyan ang dine-develop ko, ‘yung mid-range shot.”

Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao also gives the entire team the green light to take the shot, Belga said.

“Ganoon naman si coach – basta libre ka, itira mo lang,” he explained. “Nataon pa sa amin ni JR (Quiñahan) na nakaka-shoot kami. Noong maka-shoot ako sa second half, nagka-kumpiyansa na ako.”

Belga and Quiñahan, who form Rain or Shine’s famed Extra Rice Inc., both made big plays in crunch time, with Belga drilling the aforementioned go-ahead jumper and Quiñahan bothering TNT’s Ranidel de Ocampo in the dying seconds to preserve the victory.

The win was Rain or Shine’s fifth straight and ninth overall against three losses. They are tied with the Petron Blaze Boosters in the league standings and remain in contention for the twice-to-beat advantage in the playoffs.
