MANILA, Philippines – Famed Mexican trainer Ignacio “Nacho” Beristain is willing to work with former world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., but for the right price.
Beristain told Boxing Scene that he has spoken with Chavez about the possibility of training him, but they did not reach an agreement.
“There are outstanding issues that we have to discuss, but we remain open to further dialogue,” Beristain said. “They have to pay me what I’m requesting, because I’m no longer eating hard tortillas.”
“If he wants me by my side, he has to pay me,” he added.
Chavez was previously trained by Hall-of-Famer Freddie Roach, but split with him after losing for the first time against Argentina’s Sergio Martinez last September.
In a separate Boxing Scene interview, Beristain revealed he spoke with Chavez before his top fighter, Juan Manuel Marquez, fought rival Manny Pacquiao on December 8. [http://www.boxingscene.com/nacho-says-its-now-never-chavez-jr-agreement—61368]
“The amount of money that he was offering me was a ridiculous amount and I didn’t like that,” the Mexican trainer said. “I told him that if he wanted to, we could negotiate on the amount he was offering, and he told me he would think about it.”
“And I believe that he started looking for trainers who were charging what he was offering to me,” he added.
“If he wants to pay me what I want, we’ll move forward. If he decides to train with someone else, that’s good and there is no problem.”
Beristain has also said that if Chavez wants to work with him, the young Mexican boxer will have to be more disciplined and dedicate himself to training.
“We would have to come to an agreement on his discipline, which is missing from his workouts,” Beristain said. “He has to take care of himself, because he is young and handsome and the temptations are there.”
Beristain also stressed that Chavez will have to come to a decision soon since he is training several other fighters as well.
“If we do not come to an agreement in the near future, I won’t be able to do it later on, because I’ve already received several offers for my time,” he said. “I just added three or four undefeated fighters and I have to keep an eye on them.”
