MANILA, Philippines – Rain or Shine rookie Alex Nuyles has slowly worked his way into the Elasto Painters’ rotation and has been giving his team a huge boost in recent games in the PBA Philippine Cup.
“Alex Nuyles is proving himself to be a valuable asset, even to the point where he is able to contribute in end game situations,” Rain or Shine head coach Yeng Guiao told PBA.ph of the former Adamson standout.
Picked sixth in the 2013 PBA Rookie Draft, Nuyles had his highest scoring game of the season when he fired 16 points to go along with four rebounds, two assists, and two steals in RoS’ 98-87 victory over GlobalPort.
He proved that he was no flash in the pan when he scored 13 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished six assists in Rain or Shine’s 90-88 win over Talk ‘N Text, which also saw him defend Jimmy Alapag in the final seconds of the game.
Guiao said Nuyles’ performances are a “good sign” for the Elasto Painters. “It makes our team deeper in terms of our rotation,” he said.
Nuyles, a former UAAP Mythical Team member, said he was simply doing his job.
“Ginagawa ko lang ‘yung trabaho ko. Always, every practice, dapat aggressive lang. Attack the basket para ma-open up ‘yung mga shooters namin,” he said.
He also credited Guiao for the confidence that the fiery coach has shown in him.
“Kahit pangit ‘yung laro mo, andoon pa rin ‘yung kumpyansa niya,” he said. “Every time, may chance ka palagi.”
“Once na maganda ‘yung game mo sa first to third quarters, sure ‘yun na ipapasok ka sa last minute,” he added.
Rain or Shine is riding a five-game winning streak and currently shares second place in the league standings with their 9-3 win-loss record.
