MANILA, Philippines – Top welterweight contenders Jessie Vargas and Vyacheslav Senchenko have been tabbed as potential opponents for boxing icons and fierce rivals Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez.
In an interview with Boxing Scene, Marquez’s promoter, Fernando Beltran, revealed that the two fighters are both being considered as possible opponents for Marquez and Pacquiao.
“We are thinking about serious opponents, someone who would make for a good fight,” Beltran said.
“Jessie Vargas and Vyacheslav Senchenko have been mentioned (for Marquez) and for Pacquiao, and perhaps they will allow us to choose first,” he added.
Vargas, a Mexican-American boxer, is undefeated with 20 wins, with nine coming by knockout. He is currently being trained by Roger Mayweather.
Senchenko, meanwhile, is a former World Boxing Association welterweight champion with a record of 33 wins against one loss, with 22 knockouts.
After losing for the first time to Paulie Malignaggi in April 2012, he went back to his winning ways with a ninth-round technical knockout victory over Ricky Hatton in The Hitman’s comeback fight last November.
Marquez has not yet decided if he will continue his boxing career after his sensational victory over Pacquiao in December 2012.
If Marquez does continue his career, Beltran believes he can return in April 2013, with a fifth fight against Pacquiao possible for September.
