"The Filipino Flash" wants a boy
MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) – Filipino boxing champion Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire on Monday announced that he is going to become a father.
Donaire, in an exclusive interview with ABS-CBN's "Umagang Kay Ganda", described the news of his wife Rachel's pregnancy as the biggest he had received in 2012.
Rachel is now on her third month of pregnancy.
"Pero meron pa pong pinakamalaki pang [balita] kesa sa lahat ng nakuha ko sa 2012… For me, I've achieved what most fighters na nakuha, parang nabalewala iyon akin nang sinabi sa akin ng wife ko na I'm going to be a father," he said in a Skype interview from his residence in Las Vegas, Nevada.
"Tinanong sa akin last time kung meron ng baby, I was trying to not say it because we wanted to make sure. Kaya nga right now I'm telling you guys because I wanna let you guys know first."
The boxing champion said while he prefers a boy for his first-born, the most important thing is for the baby to be born healthy.
"Gusto ko lalaki. But ang importante healthy baby, kahit babae o lalaki," he said.
Rachel shares her husband's preference.
"Ako din, kasi I think, if I have a girl parang I'm gonna spend more money getting dresses, lahat di ba? I want a boy first," she said.
With a new baby coming, Donaire said he may have to change his priorities and decline fight offers.
"For me, first baby ko po ito, baka magkaka-cancel ako ng laban kung bibigyan ako. Kasi gusto ko nandoon ako everyday, every moment," he said.
"Lahat ng mga tests, lahat ng mga ultrasounds gusto kong makita lahat yun. Parang napapaiyak ako pag nakikita ko ang movements ng baby ko."
Nonetheless, Donaire said that there are three possible fights already lined up for him this year, with the first taking place sometime between March and April.
"Hindi ko pa alam kung sino at kung saan, but expect the best from Nonito Donaire kasi kailangan ko talagang manalo not just for me, for our country, but sa kid ko rin na mabigyan ko ng better future," he said.
The year 2012 was a good one for Donaire, with him winning all of his four fights. His last fight against veteran Mexican fighter Jorge Arce ended in a sensational third round technical knockout victory.
Due to his stellar performance last year, Donaire was hailed by various sports websites and magazines such as Yahoo! Sports, RING Magazine, Sports Illustrated and Boxing Scene as "Fighter of the Year".
