MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) will fully support Smart Gilas Pilipinas’ campaign in the upcoming 27th FIBA Asia Championship.

League Commissioner Chito Salud has indicated they will be releasing all the PBA players coach Chot Reyes would need for the event to be hosted by Manila this August.

The FIBA Asia Championship serves as a qualifier for the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain.

“As a member of the SBP (Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas), the PBA remains fully supportive of the Gilas National Team in its quest to officially qualify for the World Basketball Championship in Spain in 2014,” said Salud during the SBP press conference on the Asian tourney.

The league earlier agreed to lend PBA players to Gilas as long as it doesn’t hurt the PBA season.

The PBA website said this is the reason why only a handful of PBA players were able to join the national team for the 2013 Dubai International Invitational championship.

Meralco’s JayR Reyes and Ronjay Buenafe, and Air21’s KG Canaleta were the only PBA players included in Gilas' line-up for the Dubai tilt which began on Friday.

Other members of the team include 6’9” Fil-Am player Isaac Holstein, fellow cadet players Justin Melton, Matt Ganuelas, Garvo Lanete, Greg Slaughter, RR Garcia, Kevin Alas, Ronald Pascual, Jake Pascual, and naturalized Filipino Marcus Douthit.
