MANILA, Philippines – Gretchel Soltones came through with an MVP-performance as she towed San Sebastian College to a 25-22, 25-13, 25-13 victory over University of Perpetual Help in the NCAA Season 92 women's volleyball tournament Wednesday at the Arena in San Juan.
Soltones, who remains in the running for a third straight MVP award, scored a game-high 19 points on 18 spikes as the Lady Stags improved to 7-0, while also becoming the first team in the tournament to secure a spot in the Final Four.
San Sebastian is also now just two wins away from sweeping its way to the Finals. The Lady Stags still need to beat Lyceum of the Philippines University on January 23, and defending champion De La Salle-College of St. Benilde (CSB) on January 25.
If they complete the sweep, the Lady Stags will advance to the Finals outright, where they will have a thrice-to-beat edge. The other three teams, meanwhile, will battle in a step-ladder semifinals to determine who will play against San Sebastian for the championship.
"That's our goal, to be No. 1," said San Sebastian coach Roger Gorayeb.
The Lady Altas dropped to 3-3, and are now just one game away from elimination.
Earlier, Arellano University stunned CSB in straight sets, 25-21, 25-21, 25-21, to seize solo second with a 6-1 record.
Skipper Rialen Sante led her team with 15 points, while Jovielyn Prado and Ma. Erica Calixto had 13 and 10 points, respectively, to help carry the Lady Chiefs to their sixth win in a row.
Arellano's lone loss of the season came against San Sebastian in their season opener.
The Lady Blazers, meanwhile, dropped to 6-2.
In the men's division, CSB defeated Arellano, 23-25, 25-16, 29-27, 25-20, to take the solo lead and clinch at least a playoff for a semifinals seat.
The Chiefs slid to 5-2.
