Pacquiao urged: Leave Arum, fight Floyd
MANILA, Philippines – From a friend to a friend, lawyer Franklin “Jeng” Gacal gave a piece of advice to boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao: Leave Bob Arum to get that fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Gacal stressed that the Mayweather fight will establish the Filipino boxer’s legacy. He said that the only way for Pacquiao to get the elusive bout is to break his ties with long-time promoter Arum.
“Gusto ni Floyd wala si Bob Arum,” he explained to ABS-CBN News' Jay Dayupay. “Ang paraan, don't renew the contract with Bob.”
Gacal is one of Pacquiao’s closest associates. He used to review the boxer’s contracts and transactions until he went full time to serve as Pacquiao’s chief-of-staff in the House of Representatives.
He is now currently on a break from work after suffering from stroke.
Gacal said that at 35 years old, Pacquiao cannot afford to wait any longer for the Mayweather bout to happen.
He said that Pacquiao’s opportunity will come when the boxer’s contract with Arum expires at the end of 2014.
Only when Pacquiao becomes a free agent can he share the ring with Mayweather. “Make history... be a freelancer. Fight Mayweather,” said Gacal.
He said Pacquiao only has four fights left: two in 2014 and two more in 2015.
Mayweather earlier said that he refuses to fight Pacquiao for as long as the Filipino boxer remains connected with Arum.
The controversial, undefeated American boxer had a bitter falling out with the Top Rank executive due to managerial discord.
"We all know the Pacquiao fight, at this particular time, will never happen, and the reason why the fight won't happen is because I will never do business with Bob Arum again in life,” the boxer said.
