Michael Weiss no longer part of the Azkals?

MANILA, Philippines – Are the Philippine Azkals parting ways with their German coach Hans Michael Weiss?

According to Pinoy Football, the Azkals coaching job is now open after the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) did not extend Weiss contract.

“[Azkals manager Dan] Palami in his interview with's publisher David Pallasigue said they are looking for a new coach to prepare the national team for the coming AFC Challenge Cup which is set in Maldives on May 19-30 this year,” said the report.

The German coach was instrumental to the Azkals’ dramatic rise in the world standings since taking over the post left by Simon McMenemy in 2011.

Weiss reported exit came ahead of the Azkals participation in the 2014 AFC Challenge Cup in Maldives.

Under Weiss, the Filipinos scored historical firsts in Philippine football. For the first time, the Azkals reached the semifinals of the AFC Challenge Cup. They also won their first international title since 1913 by clinching the 2012 Philippine Peace Cup.

The Azkals are currently ranked 127, its highest placing ever in the FIFA world men’s rankings.
