‘Hinila n’ya jersey ko,’ he says

MANILA, Philippines – Alaska’s Calvin Abueva maintained that he did not start the fight with Meralco’s Jared Dillinger during their PBA game last Friday.

The two got tangled in a hardcourt fracas when Abueva swatted Dillinger’s drive to the basket early in the fourth quarter.

“The Beast” claimed he merely fell on Dillinger when the latter pulled his jersey on their way down to the cushioned railing near the baseline. Abueva’s elbow landed on Dillinger’s face during the action, prompting the latter to go after his neck.

“Iyung nangyari sa amin ni Jared, na-blangka ko nga, eh pagbaba ko, bigla niyang hinila ang jersey ko. Tapos syempre, paghila niya, saan ba ako pupunta?” said Abueva in Richard Dy’s Spin.ph report.

“Di naman ako mapupunta sa gilid, kasi hawak-hawak niya jersey ko, so napunta ako sa kanya. ‘Di ko naman sinasadyang tumama sa kanya, pag-iwas ko, bigla na lang siya nagalit, sinasakal niya ako ewan ko,” he added.

The commotion left Dillinger with a bloodied nose, where Abueva’s wayward elbow supposedly landed.

They were both assessed technical fouls after the commotion.

For Dillinger, the scuffle was just a result of a highly emotional game. He said it was an important match for both teams and that they were doing everything to win.

“Both teams knew the importance of the game. The rift between me and Calvin was two men going after the ball. Emotions were flying and the importance of the game was on the line,” said Dillinger in the PBA website.

“I have nothing against him. He was going hard and I was going hard. Sometimes, emotions overflow and there are no hard feelings,” Dillinger further explained.

However, PBA Commissioner Chito Salud will be reviewing the incident on Monday.

He said that if he finds that the technical fouls issued are not enough punishment, then he will summon both Abueva and Dillinger.

“If the penalties given on court are found to be proportionate to the acts in question, then I will consider the matter closed. Otherwise, I will invite the players involved to hear their side and thereafter mete out the commensurate sanctions,” he said.
