MANILA, Philippines – Ginebra’s star tandem Mark Caguioa and Jayjay Helterbrand warmly welcomed the appointment of pony-tailed basketball mentor Alfrancis Chua as their new coach.
The “Fast and the Furious” court duo described Chua as a great motivator and a “player’s coach.”
“Coach Al is a really good motivator. He is so much fun as a coach. He wants us to keep running the whole 2 hours of practice, it’s like a win-win situation for us,” the 6’1” Caguioa said in Snow Badua’s PBA report.
Chua was recently tapped by the Gin King’s management to replace Siot Tanquingcen, who coached Ginebra in the last four conferences.
“He’s a players’ coach,” Helterbrand said of Chua.
“He’ll listen to our opinions, our take on offense and defense, he’s gotten everything going so far and we’re looking OK,” added the Ginebra shooting guard.
But the on-court tandem has kind words for Tanquingcen, who stayed on as assistant coach.
They said it would be unfair to compare Tanquingcen’s coaching style to Chua’s.
“I wouldn’t say Coach Al’s system and training is better because iba naman yung kay Coach Siot,” said Caguioa.
“We achieved a lot of success with him,” said Helterbrand. “And that’s what business is. It’s not the first time it happened. But thank God, he’s still with us here in Ginebra.”
Ginebra failed to advance past the quarterfinal round of the ongoing PBA Philippine Cup after finishing third in last season’s Commissioner’s and Governors Cups.
This prompted the team management to make changes in their coaching staff.
