MANILA, Philippines – Mexican brawler Brandon Rios said he felt like he lost a fight after seeing Manny Pacquiao succumb to a knockout defeat against Juan Manuel Marquez last December.
Pacquiao’s loss meant that Rios won’t get a lucrative bout against the Filipino superstar.
"It does suck for me, because I was in line to fight Pacquiao, or the winner of that fight. So we thought Pacquiao was going to win,” Rios said in RingTV.
Rios was groomed to fight the winner of Pacquiao-Marquez IV, but because of the bout’s stunning outcome, it looks like he’ll have to wait for a while.
Boxing promoter Bob Arum said the fourth Pacquiao-Marquez clash was a so much of a barn burner that he looks forward to set a fifth bout between the two ring legends.
"That just sucks, because, now, it seems like he wants to go and fight Marquez again for the fifth time, so that kind of blows. But there's nothing I can do about it," said Rios.
Although Rios was promised a fight against the Pacquiao-Marquez winner, the Mexican brawler admitted that he is unlikely to be granted a shot against Marquez.
“I think that at the age of 39, that he's looking at retirement money for himself. So maybe that's why that's giving Pacquiao the fifth fight. Pacquiao gave him the fourth, so maybe that's why he's giving him the fifth. So I have to see what is out there for me next."
