MANILA, Philippines – Young chess players from Cadiz and Cebu City shine in the first round of chess action in the 2013 National Age-Group Chess Championships in Negros Occidental.
Boys Under-16 players Robert Ace Cabras, John Vincent Mirabe, Edgar Escobia and Genesis Descalsota, along with Under-10 campaigner Carl Anthony Procalla, all from Cadiz City, defeated their respective opponents and advanced to the next round.
Cebu City, meanwhile, dominated the Girls Under-10 and Under-8 divisions with Alphecca Gonzales, Methusellah Huban and Jasia Dorog also winning one point each.
Woodpushers from Cadiz City and various places like Silay City, Bacolod City, Guimaras, Bago City, Agusan del Sur, Bohol and Cebu City joined the event for a chance to be crowned champions in six different categories.
The tournament was moved to Cadiz City through a last-minute effort made by National Chess Federation of the Philippines committee chairman on grassroots development and promotions Neri Javier Colmenares.
The event was supposed to be hosted by Roxas City, but the place was flooded due to typhoon Quinta.
The tournament was sponsored by Sen. Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel, who is an avid fan of the sport. - By Marlon Bernardino
