MANILA, Philippines – Boxing promoter Bob Arum said Floyd Mayweather Jr. is probably looking for a tune up fight before fighting Manny Pacquiao.
Arum said this is the reason why a November fight date is ideal for a Pacquiao versus Mayweather bout.
“Knowing Floyd the way I know Floyd, Floyd is probably looking for an ordinary kind of opponent in May,” the Top Rank CEO said in an interview with Dyan Castillejo and Ronnie Nathanielsz.
Arum said Mayweather is likely to pick a Hispanic fighter for a May fight because the unbeaten boxer is thinking of getting another huge payday.
“The reason he's zeroed in on May 5 is not because of Manny Pacquiao… to fight somebody like [Robert] Guerrero, who is of Hispanic origin, because May 5 is Cinco de Mayo,” he said.
The date is observed in the US as a celebration of Mexican heritage and to commemorate the cause of freedom and democracy during the first years of the American Civil War.
Arum said that after a May fight, Mayweather can spend his jail sentence, leaving plenty of time to promote a super bout in November.
“November… is the optimum date to promote a fight,” he said.
Arum, however, is not closing his doors on a May super fight between Pacquiao and Mayweather.
He said he won’t oppose the fight as long as it gets held in the end of May.
