MANILA, Philippines – Not even a fractured nose can stop San Miguel guard Alex Cabagnot, who was named the PBA Player of the Week for the period of December 28 to January 8 after helping the Beermen rack up three impressive victories.
Cabagnot sustained a depressed nasal fracture in their game against Meralco last December 28 and was advised by doctors to undergo surgery.
Nevertheless, he got the green light to play by agreeing to wear a protective face mask during games, and the 34-year-old has not missed a beat.
The lefty guard averaged 15.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.0 assists as the Beermen won two games in the span of three days. In the process, he becomes the first player to claim the weekly honor for 2017.
Cabagnot admitted that he felt uncomfortable when he first played wearing a mask last Friday, but he still delivered, scoring 10 points in the first quarter of their game against Blackwater.
The Beermen went on to clobber the Elite, 118-93, and become the first team to earn a quarterfinals berth in the PBA Philippine Cup.
Cabagnot finished that game with 14 points and nine rebounds.
Just two days later, Cabagnot helped San Miguel scrape past Barangay Ginebra, 72-70. He scored 16 points in the win that hiked their record to 7-1.
Cabagnot beat out SMB teammates June Mar Fajardo and Arwind Santos, Rain or Shine's Jericho Cruz, NLEX's Carlo Lastimosa, and GlobalPort's Terrence Romeo for the award.
