MANILA, Philippines – Russian fighter Ruslan Provodnikov believes a boxing match between him and Filipino ring icon Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao will be a “great fight,” but also acknowledges that it can be dangerous given their styles of fighting.

At his peak, Pacquiao was known for his ability to get off punches at all sorts of angles with remarkable speed, while Provodnikov is a come-forward fighter with considerable punching power.

“Manny and I would have a great fight,” Provodnikov said in an interview with “I think that’s why everybody wants to see it.”

“It’s a dangerous fight for both of us,” he added.

Provodnikov is one of the key candidates for a fight against Pacquiao in April, although there are reports that the Filipino has already chosen to face off against unbeaten American Timothy Bradley Jr. instead.

Nevertheless, Provodnikov is contemplating a potential showdown with the Filipino, which he admits will be tough for him considering they are former sparring partners who are both trained by Hall-of-Famer Freddie Roach.

“In this fight, mental factors would play a big role,” the Russian said. “I would have my trainer Freddie Roach in the other corner. I’ve said before I never wanted to take a fight without him, and now he’s on the other side of the ring.”

Roach has made no secret of the fact that he will take Pacquiao’s side if a showdown between the “Pacman” and Provodnikov ever takes place, which will mean the Russian will have to find a new trainer.

But Provodnikov also stressed that Pacquiao is not his first choice as he is seeking a fight against Mexican superstar Juan Manuel Marquez, although he admits that fight may be difficult to put together.

“Marquez has to at least make some initiative or show that he wants the fight,” Provodnikov said. ‘He has been completely quiet on the issue.”
